LOW COST TREATMENT ABROAD

We have referred quite a few patients abroad for treatment in the last two years since leaving Bowden House clinic. People chose to go abroad for differing reasons, but cost remains the biggest factor. We have referred to Cape Town South Africa where we have found an extremely high level of service and experienced and skilled therapists. The Cost varies but is around £800 to £1000 per week. This compares well to the £4000 per week you are likely to pay in England.

We have sourced a couple of places in Spain - again around the £800 - £1000 per week - excellent homely facilities, professional staff. For my money, abroad is a viable option when money is an object. 

Rebekah has just returned from Cape Town in South Africa. We run a chaperone service for people who need assistance and added support in their journey to rehab. Rebekah took a client to Kenilworth Place in the suburbs of Cape town. KWPlace runs a 12 Step Treatment Programme, led by Dr Rojer Mayer. The overall cost is a quarter of the cost of many UK centres, so we have recommended several people over there. I don't see the point in paying four times as much for treatment when you can get high quality services for a fraction of the price.

Rebekah was very impressed by the politeness and efficiency of the staff at Kenilworth, even over a bank holiday weekend. Cape town is beautiful, situated under Table Mountain and opposite Robbin Island where Nelson Mandella was imprisoned for many years. The Staff are a highly trained team of nurses and therapists, many of whom are in recovery themselves.

Anyway, the flight was good, the airport efficient and quick, the people friendly, the clinic and the area beautiful. If you know someone who may need intensive in-patient care, let us know as they will need an assessment in UK before going over.

GLASTONBURY SOMERSET

Our Home Therapy service is taking off well. Without exception, our clients report that they prefer having Therapy at home; they feel safer and more comfortable in their own environment and feel that the work is more intensive and effective. Alistair has just finished a month’s intensive therapy in Somerset with a family and concerned friends and relatives who belong to a closed Religious Christian community.

‘This was a great opportunity to work closely with a community who don’t easily involve outsiders.  I have worked with this particular community, who have groups around the country, for the last two years. Of the 6 individual alcoholics I have helped from around the country, all remain sober at this time. I think what makes the difference here, quite apart from our approach, is the strength of the extended support system which they have. I have been able to help enhance this with education and advice for all concerned. Oh and Glastonbury was great to.’

MARCH 2007

This year has started quickly and we have been increadably busy. I have been working in Somerset, Worcester, Andover and Spain and Rebekah in South Africa, all over Greater London, Spain and Norway. A family in Edinburgh has asked for our help and another in West Sussex and I am off to South Africa in a couple of weeks.
