A Non 12 Step Approach

In our work with clients we have noticed that many clients and patients request therapy and Counselling that is non 12 Step orientated. Whilst we are in no way against the 12 steps, and actively encourage clients who wish to attend 12 Step AA meetings to do so, and we will refer to 12 Step Treatment where appropriate, we do not use the steps in our treatment. Our therapy runs in paralel to the 12 step approach but we feel that the 12 steps belong to Alcoholics Anonymous and the various fellowships that use the steps. As professional therapists our goal is to compliment the 12 steps, but also offer therapy in addition to any 12 step guidance a client may be recieving.

I still hear, even today, some individuals, even some professionals say that the only way for people to recover is through the 12 steps. This is clearly not true. I have seen Alcoholics and Addicts recover in many weird and wonderful ways and some of those used the 12 steps. Believe me that there is no such thing as a panacea for treating Addiction. There is no one group who has all the answers. There are many great and good things about The Anonymous fellowships and I encourage those that can, to get what you can from them. However, it is definately not the cure all for addictions.

Much has been learned in the world of Counselling, Psychology and Therapy for Alcohoics & Addicts. We know so much more and have many many effective techniques available to us to enhance our practices and work with people who are actively seeking help with Addiction problems. We adhear to the principle of taking the best from what is available and forming a treatment approach to suit each individuals needs in a way that is effective and powerful.  We all must add to our attitudes and practices and not stick rigidly to old outdated ideas, practices and beliefs. Rebekah and  I firmly believe in those principle and continually research and work with the many innovative ideas and practices which are emerging year by year.
